Welcome visitors from Art Saves! My friend Cheryl featured my site yesterday and in honor of that, I’m sharing a story of how God used art in the process of restoring my marriage.
After years of faithfully serving Moses, Joshua was appointed by God to lead the children of Israel into the land of promise. However, the land was already occupied and the Israelites would need to conquer and take back what was rightfully theirs. I believe Joshua well understood the meaning of his name, "The Lord is my salvation." Salvation from their enemies would only come from the Lord God Himself.
"Be strong and courageous..." Joshua 1:6
When God appointed Joshua to rise up as a leader, He admonished Him over and over to be strong and courageous. He reminded Joshua of the oath He had given, but also knew Joshua would be on the battlefield. The promise would not come without a fight. Toil and tears lay ahead, but God would lead them through the valley.
"...Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
There is much to be learned from Joshua. While we are not in a battlefield facing giants occupying our land, we do face daily battles in our everyday lives, our homes, even in our own hearts.
2009 was a year that tested my marriage and ultimately exposed my own walk with the Lord. I thought I stood strong, walking on a sure foundation with Jesus as the chief cornerstone. In reality, I walked unsteadily on a balance beam of faith that resulted in my own fall, hurting my husband and children deeply along the way. Anger, rage, resentment, pain, and sorrow entered our home. The one I vowed to love, honor and cherish became my enemy. We would go head to head in battle every day. Battle after battle after battle.
In July of that year a group of my friends joined together in a Bible Study that used art as a vehicle for going deeper with God. However, as God would have it, my husband and I went deeper with each other.
Each art piece we created helped open doors where they were once walls and we realized one important thing.
We were fighting the wrong enemy and didn't even know it.
"Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness. against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." Ephesians 6:12
My husband and I realized we need to stand TOGETHER behind a shield of faith against the one who seeks to devour and destroy. (I Peter 5:8-9)
Being on a battlefield is exhausting and takes preparation, hard work and commitment. We must be ready to fight, even when we are tired and weary. We must put on our armor even when it feels so heavy that it weighs us down. We must stand up and raise our swords, even when our arms are weak, bruised and battered.
We created this artwork as our daily reminder and a symbol to stand united always.
"Take up the full armor of God, that you may resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Ephesians 6:11-17
Truthfully, it seems far easier to give up and wave a white flag of surrender.
Then, I am given an encouraging reminder to stand firm. After all, the battle is already won by Jesus Christ. We have overcome and have great victory in Him. As tears welled up in her eyes in the midst of eating dinner together, in all her seven years of wisdom, Isabella said,
"I have something to say. Even though this was the saddest part of my life, I want to let you know that I am glad you guys chose to work things out and stay together. I am very proud of you for that. I didn't want you to get divorced because I want us to be a family."
"Be strong and courageous..." The same words that rang in Joshua's ears, rang over and over in my own heart. Just as God promised Joshua that he would overcome his enemies, He promises the same to us.
"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches, To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God." Revelation 2:7
When Joshua and the children of Israel defeated their enemies, they entered the promised land in Israel. And while I don't think bottles of champagne were poured or streamers and balloons filled the room, a victory speech was still in order. From the time of Abraham to the bondage in Egypt, the Israelites were reminded of how faithful God was. Yet, they were also confronted with the fact they turned away from the very God who rescued them. A choice now laid before them.
"Choose for yourselves today whom you will serve...but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15
This anthem of old, spoke thousands of years ago after a victorious battle won by the Lord, has now become a hymn of victory in our own home.
