Eyes closed I imagine for a moment, a formless void.
A black darkness of existence with a mysterious beginning.
Stillness weaves in and out of me, over and under its depth surrounds me. The intensity of silence is almost deafening to my ears. There is no beauty for my eyes to behold. No touch of water drops trickling down my face. No sounds of pleasantries chirping melodies with the morning dew. No varied hues aglow in sunlight sky.
Pure dark brush strokes glide along a blank canvas. Nothing is formed or fashioned. Outside of time and space yet, centered in existence.
“In the beginning Elohim…” (Genesis 1:1)
A thick, weightless, hovering Presence envelopes my vacancy. Caught up in gentle breeze, seemingly fierce in this empty space, I steady to conjure from where it sways.
In darkness there is nowhere to look. No one to see. Yet this Presence is undeniably here.
“And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep and the Spirit of Elohim was moving over the surface of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2)
Step in the existence of eternal beginnings and see afresh what took place.
Read Genesis Chapter 1.
Elohim in Hebrew is God.
Throughout scripture when reading of gods, El or Eloah is used. However, Elohim, is reserved for the God whose Spirit hovered over the universe when it was without form. The only absolute God.
Elohim is plural, which can be used to support evidence of a Triune God, but scholars deduce Elohim also refers to the intensity of God’s power.
Read Deuteronomy 10:17. What does this verse say about the intensity of God’s deity?
ELOHIM, THE MIGHTY ONE
Deity is defined as “the estate or rank of a god; divine character or nature; godhood; the character of nature of the Supreme Being.”
Elohim is the Supreme Being of all beings. He is the God of gods and the Lord of lords.
Wholly divine, God’s power over creation rests in the fact He is the Initiator and Architect. God reminds Job He alone is Author and Chief Commander of life.
“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
When the morning stars sang together?
Have you ever commanded the morning and asked the dawn to know its place?
Have you entered into springs of the sea or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
Who has cleft a channel for the flood, or a way for the thunderbolt…or make the seeds of grass to sprout?
Who has put wisdom in the innermost being, or has given understanding to the mind?
Who can count the clouds by wisdom, or tip the water jars of heavens?
Selected verses in Job 38
In response, Job is rendered speechless. “Behold, I am insignificant; what can I repay to Thee? I lay my hands on my mouth.” (Job 40:4)
MIGHTY PLAN OF ELOHIM
Relegated to humility, Job can only stand as a captive to God’s power. In doing so, Job learns one of the most valuable lessons that us believers must also grasp.
“I know that You can do all things. And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.” (Job 42:2)
This massive, undisputable God spoke forth the complexities of life and He has a plan that no one will ever derail. A plan set outside of time and space. A plan created by Elohim in the dark recesses of the earth.
A plan that will never change or cease to exist.
Against Elohim we are incapable to ever thwart His plan over our lives. His purpose for you is a pillar that will stand when ancient ruins have crumbled to dust.
The God who commands the thunders to roar is the same God who breathed life into flesh and bones. Within days of opening doors of Heaven and earth, He created you in His image and gave you a purpose.
It is easy to wallow when a haze clouds the roadway of life. Just the other day, I confessed to the Lord I felt out of focus and walked in a wayward circle of monotony. I considered myself an empty shell lacking direction and purpose. I fell into a pit of despair.
Elohim reminded me of the plurality of His great and might.
Read Psalm 71:19-21.
What does the Psalmist reveal about God? What does God do for His children in times of trouble and distress?
The same Elohim who created the earth is the One able to bring me up from the depths of the earth.
The same is true for you. On days you are wandering on earth with no directional signs, His might carries you out of the miry pit and His power revives you to fulfill His purpose.
Let’s close in Exodus 15:11. “Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?”
When all strength leaves you and hope is diminished, run to the tower of Elohim, you will find revival in the power of His might.
