Amy commented on {Heart Session No. 4:: Love is Patient, Love is Kind}, saying it's the little things that mean so much. Last night for the very first time, I heard the song, "Little Things Mean A Lot" written in 1953, with it's most popular rendition sung by Kallen Kitty.
A dear friend who has poured his heart over my husband and I through love, counsel, prayers and hugs reminisced about his wife of over 45 years. He recalled how she never ceased doing those small acts of love and kindness no matter what their circumstances were. One of his fondest memories was during the last year of her life. Faithfully, every day after work, he called to say he was headed home. Her response was always the same, "I can't wait until you come home." It was indeed the little things that made him want to reciprocate that kindness...even after all those years.
The lyrics, written in the 1950's, present a reflection of God's love toward us - filled with tender compassion, the utmost care and attention, and merciful grace.
Blow me a kiss from across the room
Say I look nice when I'm not
Touch my hair as you pass my chair
Little things mean a lot
" The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with his love,
He will rejoice over you with singing."
Zephaniah 3:17
Give me your arm as we cross the street
Call me at six on the dot
A line a day when you're far away
Little things mean a lot
"The Lord is my Shepherd...He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul; He guides me in paths of righteousness.
Even though I walk through the valley..., I fear no evil;
for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff comfort me."
Psalm 23: 2-4
Don't have to buy me diamonds or pearls
Champagne, sables, and such
I never cared much for diamonds and pearls
'cause honestly, honey, they just cost money
"You will be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
and a royal diadem in the hand of God....Your God will rejoice over you."
Isaiah 62:3,5
Give me a hand when I've lost the way
Give me your shoulder to cry on
Whether the day is bright or gray
Give me your heart to rely on
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For though has been a refuge for me, A tower of strength...
Let me take refuge in the shelter of Thy wings."
Psalm 61:2-4
Send me the warmth of a secret smile
To show me you haven't forgot
For now and forever, that's always and ever
Honey, little things mean a lot
"His going forth is as certain as the dawn;
And He will come to us like rain,
Like spring water watering the earth."
Hosea 6:3
Perhaps, the little things really do mean the most when we see them from a different perspective.
"Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children, and
Ephesians 5:1-2
I have been commanded to love as God loved. It is one of, if not THE, hardest things to do because where love dwells, there is no room for self. It is a pure act of intention. So, while I may not be able to carry out every action of love described in I Corinthians 13, I can begin at the beginning. I can lay small stones of kindness, building a firm foundation to stand upon.
