For months I collected ideas and jotted down notes for my letterpress tray project. I loved the idea of having various sized compartments to put special momentos, like my mom's necklace or a special butterfly pin. However, I knew I couldn't fill every single nook and cranny of this piece, especially since too many knicknacks overwhelm me.
So here is the final result.
I lined each compartment with patterned paper, then nailed a hook and hung a vintage frame on each side. I used two different sized and style frames to add visual interest and lined it with ledger paper. I drew the bird and bird cage and cut out with an xacto knife and added to the frame.
This was the inspiration sample created for the "Partridge in a Pear Tree" workshop held last month. Since the workshop piece was a wooden shadowbox replica of only the center part, I thought I'd show the entire project.
Still trying to determine where to put this big bady boy...thinking about our bedroom since it could use a bit of color!
And speaking of letterpress, I happened upon my friend's garage the other day and it was like hitting the jackpot! It was a complete studio with vintage letterpress machines and wall to wall drawers of metal and wooden letters. A friend of theirs was going to get rid of his studio, but moved his shop into their garage instead. It was nothing short of amazing! I hope to take a "fieldtrip" there soon with the kids so the owner can share his techniques and maybe make a poster or two if I am lucky.
And speaking of making letterpress posters, PÄS will be serving up some rad (yes, I did say RAD) letterpress workshops later this month.
